Built for Gundam Builders Australia Facebook group “Wing It!” challenge which was held to celebrate the release of the RG Wing Zero. One of the rules of the build was that we had to build a Wing Gundam or any of it’s variations, and I had to choose between the Proto Zero or the TV Wing in my backlog. Since I only had a month, I chose the simpler of the two.
Though I’m not a fan of the oldschool design, the MG kit does have some pretty nice proportions. My only real complaints are that the limbs did pop off a few times whilst I was trying to pose the thing. Other than that, the kit is more than capable of holding the Buster rifle with no problems, and the claws even hook onto it for some added stability.
Painting
White – Intermediate Blue (100%) base coat, followed by White (100%) for shading.
Blue – Cobalt Blue (70%) + Bright Blue (30%) + a drop of Fluorescent pink. White is added into the mixture for highlights.
Red – Black (100%) Base coat, starter White (100%), followed by coat of Red Madder (70%) + Shine Red (30%). Finally, a bit of white, orange and neutral grey is added to the mixture for highlights.
Yellow – Base coat of Orange (100%), starter White, followed by light coat of Orange Yellow (70%) + Yellow (30%). A bit of White and Yellow is added to the mixture for highlights.
Internal Grey – Base coat of Black (70%) + Neutral Grey (30%), followed by Black (90%) + Neutral Grey (10%) for highlights.
Clear Green – Clear green (50%) + Clear (50%)
Buster Rifle grey – Tamiya Gunmetal spray

Man, the shading for the white is SO good! Painting white, adding a proper shading is still my weakest point in gunpla painting! Do you have any special advice about it? Thanks in advance and keep up with the good work!

Dear YJ, Thanks for your reply. To make it short I have some issues thinning properly tamiya white (other tamiya colors I tried seem to work just fine) and even if I paint multiple coats it is still a bit too trasparent! Nothing so dramatic I guess should practice more with my airbrush! Just taking advantage of your kindness for one more thing, the following steps (I follow for painting) are good enough in your opinion?

tamiya flat black (alternatively tamiya medium gray)

A long time ago I used to do the black coat for painting white, but I found it took many many coats for the piece to finally look white (around 3-4 coats).
These days I use a medium-light gray with a hint of blue for a base coat. So maybe try using something lighter as a base coat. It takes much less time and only about 1-2 coats of white to cover. It also depends how thick/thin the paint it as thinner paint will take more coats to cover.
